Dzięki dofinansowaniu z Narodowego Instytutu Muzealnictwa i Ochrony Zbiorów nasze muzeum wzbogaciło się o nowy obraz autorstwa Jerzego Hoppena namalowany jeszcze w Wilnie w 1935 r. pt. „Św. Jan Chrzciciel”.
Święty ukazany jest w hieratycznej pozie, statycznej postawie, a wyrazisty modelunek światłocieniowy, precyzyjny rysunek oraz to, w jaki sposób Hoppen łączy język współczesnej sztuki z elementami zaczerpniętymi z twórczości dawnych mistrzów – cechują dojrzały styl artysty. Obraz jest wyjątkowy, gdyż Jerzy Hoppen jest znany przede wszystkim jako grafik, a jego obrazów zachowało się niewiele, zwłaszcza z okresu wileńskiego. Te najstarsze obrazy artysty można podziwiać właśnie w toruńskim muzeum i to w jednej sali Galerii w Ratuszu Staromiejskim, gdzie jest eksponowany wraz z innymi dziełami przedstawicieli nowego klasycyzmu wileńskiego.

Thanks to the funding from the National Institute for Museums and Public Collections, our Museum has gained a new painting by Jerzy Hoppen, entitled „St. John the Baptist”, which was painted in Vilnius in 1935.
The Saint is shown in a hieratic pose, static posture, precise drawing and the expressive chiaroscuro modelling. Hoppen combines the language of modern art with elements taken from the works of old masters – this characterizes the artist’s mature style. The painting is unique, because Jerzy Hoppen is known primarily as a graphic artist, and only a few of his oil paintings have survived, especially from the Vilnius Period. These oldest paintings by the artist are exhibited in the Torun’s Museum in one gallery room in the Old Town Hall, where it is exhibited together with other works by representatives of the New Vilnius Classicism.
The purchase is co-financed by the National Institute for Museums and Public Collections.
