District Museum in Toruń is the oldest and biggest cultural institution in the region.
It was created in 1861 and nowadays consists of 6 branches:
The cultural offer of the museum is incredibly rich – its individual branches entice visitors with the rarest exhibits from far Asia, masterpieces painted by such Polish artists as Julian Fałat, Jacek Malczewski, Józef Chełmoński, Jan Matejko, Andrzej Wróblewski, Zdzisław Beksiński, Tadeusz Kantor, and Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, unique souvenirs from the exotic travels of Tony Halik and Elżbieta Dzikowska, legendary Copernicus artefacts, unique archaeological founds, and, finally, the famous Toruń gingerbread cakes and everything related to the process of creation of this sweet treat.
Every year, the institution organizes spectacular exhibitions, museum nights, international competitions for children and youth, various workshops, lectures and meetings with famous personalities. What is more, it is also active in publishing, ensuring a varied offer including professional studies, albums, catalogues and popular science books.
